BIO/RESUME

I grew up in Massachusetts listening to AM radio in the back seat of a Plymouth Volare station wagon. Somewhere around the age of 8 or 9 I really got into British classic rock, and especially progressive rock like Yes and ELP. In elementary school I took up the snare drum and bass drum in the marching band, but at age 12 realized that I wanted to be Chris Squire and started taking bass guitar lessons.

In high school I discovered jazz and continued in that direction while studying music at the University of New Hampshire, where I took up the upright bass. I studied with John Hunter and had the good fortune of performing with and learning from a number of guest artists who came to the school, including Clark Terry, Milt Hinton, Dave Holland, Jamil Nasser, Sheila Jordan, and many others. While at UNH I starting listening to quite a bit of avant-garde and free jazz, and enjoyed exploring the music of Ornette Coleman, Henry Threadgill, the AACM, lots of stuff on the ESP and Impulse labels...

Currently I'm living in Southern Maine and performing regularly with free improv group Equal Time. I also freelance quite a bit, playing jazz any place that will have me, with a lot of the characters listed below.
